What is the substance in coffee that acts as a laxative?
Totally random question, but what is it that acts as a laxative in coffee? It’s not the caffeine as other caffeine beverages don’t have the same effect on me. Only coffee…
I don’t have such a response to coffee in particular. However, I do get that way when I drink a lot of caffeine in general.
There’s nothing in the actual coffee that I’m aware of.
Sweeteners have a laxitive effect – as will milk if you are lactose intollerant.
Caffeine is a stimulant and a diuretic.
It will increase your metabolism and make your digestive system work faster, hence make you go faster. As a diuretic it will also make you go number one. It will also make you go if you take it with cream or milk and you are lactose intolerant.
On top of that it is believed that coffee inhibits an enzyme that regulates mucosal secretions in your small intestines, so depending on your tolerance and intake it may cause your stools to be loose or loser than usual.
